Assessment of Public STAC Catalogs as Alternatives to Google Earth Engine Datasets

Teacher: Giovanna Venuti

Supervisor: Ing. Gianluca Murdaca – MindEarth

Description: The goal of this project is to explore, map and compare the datasets currently accessed through Google Earth Engine with equivalent datasets available through public STAC catalogs. The student will analyze a selection of datasets used in an existing geospatial processing pipeline, identify corresponding public STAC-based sources, and compare them in terms of availability, metadata structure, spatial and temporal coverage, access methods, and ease of integration. The project will produce a structured comparison framework and a feasibility assessment highlighting opportunities, limitations, and the effort required to migrate part of the pipeline from Earth Engine to open STAC-based data access. The final deliverable will include a comparative report and a small proof of concept for one selected dataset.

Difficult level: Medium

Requirements:Basic knowledge of Python, APIs, JSON, and geospatial data formats. Familiarity with raster data, metadata handling, and cloud-based geospatial workflows is beneficial. Knowledge of Google Earth Engine or STAC is a plus but not mandatory.
