Performance Analysis of a Low-Cost GNSS Receiver in Urban and Open-Sky Environments

Teacher and supervisor: Prof. Ludovico Biagi

Area di ricerca: GNSS Positioning

Keywords  GNSS – Standard Point Positioning

Description

In the first phase of the project, the work consists of the setup of a GNSS-SDR (Global Navigation Satellite System – Software Defined Radio) receiver and the acquisition of raw signals under various visibility conditions. During this stage, scripts will be developed for data cleaning and statistical performance analysis in single-epoch Standard Point Positioning (SPP), evaluating key industry metrics such as bias, standard deviation, planimetric RMSE, covariance error ellipses, and their correlation with DOP (Dilution of Precision) and multipath.

The second phase will focus on data acquisition under ideal open-sky conditions on the roof of the Chemistry Building (Leonardo Campus). The objective is to implement Kalman filtering algorithms in static mode and perform differential analysis using data from the Politecnico’s CORS (Continuously Operating Reference Station). This will allow for comparison of the performance of both absolute and differential positioning techniques, culminating in a comprehensive technical report.
